"On
Jun 18th, Uttarakhand, a hilly state in Northern India at the foothills
of the Himalayas, witnessed torrential rains leading to landslides and
large scale flooding of numerous rivers including the Ganges. The
widespread devastation has resulted in the unfortunate loss of a large
number of lives and thousands of people have been stranded without many
options to get back home. The Indian army and a number of NGOs are also
carrying out relief and rehabilitation efforts in the affected areas.
Association for India's Development (AID) is a volunteer movement promoting
sustainable, equitable and just development. AID supports grassroots
organizations in India and initiates efforts in various interconnected
spheres such as education, livelihoods, natural resources including
land, water and energy, agriculture, health, women's empowerment and
social justice.
AID is supporting the relief work of Uttarkhand and talking to many other grassroots groups. Having
worked in several major disasters earlier, we have seen that immediate
response is crucial for helping the most vulnerable survivors, and that
persistent work by ground-level organizations beyond the first few weeks
is required for relief and rehabilitation."
